A mountain of beautiful alpine meadows, plunging waterfalls and sheer cliffs, Mount Buffalo is not only one of Victoria's most spectacular national parks, it is also amongst its oldest. Capturing the imagination of explorers Hume and Hovell in 1824, they named the mountain after its likeness to a sleeping buffalo. In time this ancient volcano would draw gold miners, cattlemen, botanists and tourists to its peaks. Long before the explorers however, indigenous tribes made their annual ascent to the mountains plateau, feasting on Bogong moths and resting in the cool summer air. Although the tribes have long since made their final descent into the valleys below, one can almost imagine the scene as they enjoyed the view from these rugged granite walls.
